A wide-ranging Q&A on hominin evolution, from the 800kya bottleneck through self-domestication, violence in the fossil record, and prehistoric social organization.
The 800kya Human Population Bottleneck
What species was it? Likely the last common ancestor of modern humans, Neanderthals, and Denisovans — pre-speciation. Sometimes framed as ancestors of Homo heidelbergensis. Theories for the bottleneck
- Mid-Pleistocene Transition climate shift — glaciation cycles lengthened to 100k yrs, severe African droughts ~900–800kya (leading hypothesis).
- Massive speciation event splitting lineages.
- Volcanic/environmental catastrophe.
Evidence from other animals Mixed. Some African mammals (primates, bovids) show Mid-Pleistocene genetic bottlenecks too, supporting climate cause. But no universal co-bottleneck — critics (Deschamps, Hawks) argue the human signal may be a statistical artifact of the FitCoal method.
Critics’ position May be no bottleneck at all — FitCoal’s signal could be artifacts from ancestral population structure, archaic admixture, or sampling bias. Ancient DNA & fossil record show no matching crash. Hawks: “ghost in the statistics.” Not an alt-cause, an alt-existence.
Verdict Insufficient evidence. One striking genomic signal, plausible climate context, but no corroboration from fossils, archaeology, or ancient DNA. Needs independent replication with different methods.
Competition and Predation ~800kya
Competitors: H. erectus (Africa/Asia), H. antecessor (Europe), possibly H. naledi ancestors.
Predators: leopards, hyenas, sabertooths (Dinofelis — specialized hominin hunter), crocodiles, large eagles. Taung Child (eagle kill) shows we were prey. Fire use debated then.
Was H. erectus also decimated? Unclear — the bottleneck signal is only in our lineage’s genome. H. erectus persisted widely (Africa, Georgia, China, Java until ~108kya) with no equivalent crash detected. Either adapted better, was geographically buffered, or left no genomic trace.
Ancestor or cousin? Both. African H. erectus/ergaster (~1.9–0.5mya) is ancestral to us, Neanderthals & Denisovans via H. heidelbergensis. Asian H. erectus (Java, China) is a cousin lineage — dead-end branch that persisted until ~108kya Ngandong.
Homo heidelbergensis vs Homo erectus
H. heidelbergensis (~700–200 kya) is best understood as a late, larger-brained descendant of African H. erectus/ergaster, and the probable last common ancestor of modern humans, Neanderthals, and Denisovans.
Brain size: erectus ~900–1,100 cc; heidelbergensis ~1,200–1,400 cc (overlapping modern range ~1,350 cc). Encephalization accelerated sharply — linked to cooking, higher-quality diet, social complexity.
Skull and face: Erectus had a long, low, thick-walled cranium with strong sagittal keel, massive browridges, sharply angled occipital. Heidelbergensis retained heavy brows but had a taller, more rounded vault, broader flatter midface. Face “tucked under” the braincase.
Body: Erectus (esp. ergaster, Nariokotome Boy) — tall, long-legged, committed to endurance walking/running. Heidelbergensis — similar stature but more robust; thicker bones, broader pelvis, barrel chest. European populations cold-adapted, stocky.
Technology: Erectus — Oldowan then Acheulean handaxes (~1.7mya onward), conservative toolkit for over a million years. Heidelbergensis — refined Acheulean, developed prepared-core (Levallois) techniques ~300–400kya, first reliable hafted spears (Schöningen, ~300–400kya). Qualitative leap in planning depth.
Fire and shelter: Erectus used fire opportunistically (Wonderwerk ~1mya, Zhoukoudian contested). Heidelbergensis — routine controlled hearth use by ~400kya (Beeches Pit, Schöningen, Qesem). Built shelters, organized living spaces.
Hunting: Erectus capable but systematic big-game hunting debated. Heidelbergensis clearly hunted large dangerous prey cooperatively — horses at Schöningen, elephants at Gröbern and Lehringen. Implies language-adjacent coordination.
Cognition & culture: Erectus limited symbolic behavior (Trinil shell engraving ~500kya, ambiguous). Heidelbergensis — pigment use (Twin Rivers, Kapthurin), possible deliberate disposal of dead (Sima de los Huesos, 28 bodies, ~430kya), anatomical prerequisites for speech (hyoid, ear bones at Sima).
Range & climate: Erectus — largely temperate/tropical. Heidelbergensis — pushed into cold northern Europe (Boxgrove UK ~500kya; Happisburgh footprints ~850kya). Required fire, clothing, shelter as non-negotiables.
Lifespan: Erectus — faster life history. Heidelbergensis — extended childhood, delayed maturation approaching modern pattern.
Violence in Heidelbergensis
Sima de los Huesos Cranium 17 (~430kya, Spain) — two near-identical blunt-force fractures above left brow. Same weapon, different angles. Earliest clear evidence of interpersonal homicide.
Bodo cranium (Ethiopia, ~600kya) — cutmarks, defleshing. Ambiguous (cannibalism? ritual?).
Interspecies conflict? No direct evidence of heidelbergensis-vs-erectus conflict — they barely overlapped geographically/temporally. Succession, not war.
Sapiens vs Neanderthals
Evidence thin and contested.
- Shanidar 3 (Iraq, ~50kya): healed rib wound consistent with a thrown projectile — sapiens weapon tech, Neanderthals used thrusting spears.
- St. Césaire Neanderthal: healed cranial fracture, ambiguous.
- No mass graves, no clear battle sites.
Extinction likely gradual: competition, climate, absorption via interbreeding (1–4% Neanderthal DNA in non-Africans). Pääbo/Stringer favor demographic replacement over warfare.
Out of Africa and Interbreeding
Multiple waves, each meeting resident Homo:
- H. erectus left ~1.9mya
- H. heidelbergensis left ~700kya, evolving into Neanderthals (Europe) & Denisovans (Asia)
- H. sapiens left ~60–70kya (plus earlier failed dispersals ~200kya)
Interbred with both:
- 1–4% Neanderthal DNA in non-Africans
- Up to 5% Denisovan in Melanesians/Papuans
- Recent African populations also show back-flow Neanderthal DNA
Heidelbergensis Demographics
Limited sample:
- Sima de los Huesos (28 individuals, ~430kya): mostly teens to young adults, few children, few elderly.
- Bodo (~600kya): subadult.
- Boxgrove (~500kya): young male.
Pattern: high juvenile mortality, few past 40. Life expectancy ~30–35 mean, but conditional on reaching adulthood. Fossils biased toward cave deposits.
The Upper Paleolithic Revolution (~40kya)
Behavioral explosion: cave art (Chauvet, Sulawesi), figurines (Venus of Hohle Fels 40.8kya), bone tools, jewelry.
Climate: End of MIS 3, entering the last glacial maximum (~26.5–19kya) — colder, drier, more seasonal.
Theories:
- Cognitive threshold — symbolic capacity “switched on” via genetic/neural changes.
- Population density — enough people to sustain cultural complexity.
- Climate stress — art as ritual/meaning-making under duress.
Some argue earlier (>60kya Africa) but less visible. No consensus on causation.
Other emergent behaviors: language crystallization (grammar, recursion, displaced reference), symbolic notation (ochre marks, tallies), intensified ritual (burial with grave goods, shamanism), scaled cooperative hunting (atlatl, bow), long-distance trade networks (shells, obsidian over hundreds of km), tailored clothing, social hierarchy hints.
Diet & environment: Pure hunter-gatherer, increasingly specialized — megafauna, fish/seafood, seasonal movement. High protein, diverse plant foods. Storage required planning. Climate oscillations (Heinrich Events) forced dietary innovation. No cultivation yet — agriculture starts ~12kya.
Climate context: Modern humans evolved in the late Pleistocene’s unstable climate. The Holocene (last 11.7kya) is unusually stable — enabled agriculture, cities, civilization. We’re exiting that stability now.
Preservation bias: Massive. Cave paintings preserve; open-air art erodes. Portable art (bone, antler) survives; perishables (wood, skin, plant fibers) don’t. Africa likely had art 60–100kya, mostly lost. Estimate: we see maybe 1–10% of what existed. “Sudden” explosion partly illusion — better preservation in European caves, Eurocentric focus. Famous caves likely represent elite/ceremonial art, not everyday behavior. Palenque analogy — 60% still under jungle.
Fossil Gossip and Weirdness
- Piltdown Man (1912) — English hoax, orangutan jaw + human skull, fooled science for 40 years.
- Lucy’s death — likely fell from a tree (2016 study).
- Homo naledi drama — Berger’s claims of 300kya burial and engravings with orange-sized brains; ongoing feud, preprint publication.
- Red Deer Cave people (China, ~14kya) — unclassified mosaic, possibly Denisovan descendants.
- The Denisovan finger — entire species from one pinky bone (2010). First jaw 2019 (Tibet); “Dragon Man”/H. longi possibly Denisovan.
- Neanderthal interbreeding proof — Pääbo 2010, embarrassing for the “replacement only” camp.
- Zinjanthropus/Nutcracker Man — Leakey hyped it for funding, quietly downgraded to Paranthropus boisei.
Fossil features worth knowing:
- Kabwe 1 (~300kya) — earliest known dental caries. Also a skull hole: tumor, infection, or spear wound?
- Shanidar 1 (Neanderthal) — blind, withered arm, deaf, limped, lived to ~40–50. Cared for by others. Compassion evidence.
- La Chapelle-aux-Saints — toothless old arthritic man. Source of the wrong “brutish caveman” stereotype for 50 years.
- Sima de los Huesos “Excalibur” — single pink quartzite handaxe among 28 bodies. Earliest symbolic deposition, ~430kya.
- Turkana Boy — 8yo, 5’3”, herniated disc, scoliosis, narrow spinal canal (limited breath control → probably no modern speech).
- Lucy’s knee — found a year before the rest, 2.5km away. Proved bipedality first.
- Hobbit (H. floresiensis) — 3’6”, chimp-sized brain, made tools, hunted dwarf elephants, survived until ~50kya. Genuinely archaic wrist bones.
- Dmanisi skulls (Georgia, 1.8mya) — five erectus skulls, wildly different morphology, same population. Forced lumping of species.
- Jebel Irhoud (Morocco, 315kya) — pushed H. sapiens origin back 100ky. Modern face, archaic braincase — brain shape evolved after face.
Self-Domestication
Hypothesis (Wrangham, Hare): H. sapiens shows classic domestication syndrome vs Neanderthals/archaics — smaller face, reduced brow, shorter jaw, smaller teeth, rounder skull, reduced dimorphism, extended juvenile period, lower reactive aggression.
Mechanism: Selection against aggression → neural crest cell changes → cascades into facial/cranial changes. Same suite in dogs vs wolves, bonobos vs chimps.
Evidence: Testosterone markers in skulls drop ~50kya, coinciding with cultural explosion.
Bonobos vs chimps: Bonobos are less successful ecologically — confined to ~500,000 km² south of Congo River (DRC only), ~15–20k individuals. Chimps span ~2.6 million km², 21 countries, 170–300k individuals. Self-domestication may be a luxury of abundance, not a winning strategy under pressure. Relevant for sapiens — our cooperative turn happened as we dominated ecosystems.
Other self-domesticating species:
- Urban foxes (real-time Belyaev-like changes — shorter snouts, piebald coats)
- Urban coyotes, raccoons, rats
- Bali mynas, house sparrows
- Belyaev’s Russian foxes — 60+ years selecting for tameness produced the full syndrome
- Zebrafish, Bengalese finches show syndrome features under captivity
- Debated: elephants, orcas, cetaceans
Neural crest hypothesis (Wilkins, Wrangham, Fitch 2014) predicts syndrome in any species selected against reactive aggression.
Synanthropic: wild species living alongside humans without domestication — rats, pigeons, raccoons, urban foxes, sparrows, cockroaches, crows, coyotes. Obligate (Norway rats, house sparrows) vs facultative (foxes, crows).
Are we still self-domesticating? Plausibly yes:
- Selection continues (prison, social exclusion, reduced mating success for reactive aggression)
- Skull gracilization continued through Holocene — faces smaller, jaws weaker (wisdom tooth crowding)
- Testosterone markers declining
- Pinker’s Better Angels — violence rates dropped massively
- Counter-forces: modern medicine, assortative mating, weaker selection
Speculative but coherent: we may be domesticating ourselves into something Pleistocene ancestors wouldn’t recognize.
Violence in the Fossil Record
Sporadic in early fossils (Sima 430kya, Bodo 600kya, isolated Neanderthal injuries). Becomes abundant and systemic in the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition, ~12–5kya — sedentism, agriculture, property.
Key sites:
- Jebel Sahaba (Sudan, ~13.4kya) — earliest cemetery with mass violence. 61 skeletons, ~45% died violently. Chronic raiding.
- Nataruk (Kenya, ~10kya) — 27 hunter-gatherers massacred, bound, killed with projectiles & clubs. Pre-agricultural.
- Ofnet Cave (Germany, ~7.5kya) — 34 severed heads in pits.
- Talheim (Germany, ~7kya) — LBK Neolithic mass grave, 34 killed with adzes.
- Schöneck-Kilianstädten (~7kya) — tortured, mutilated Neolithic village.
Pattern: Upper Paleolithic (40–12kya) — individual violence, not mass. Post-glacial density, stored food, territorial claims → organized raiding. Bronze Age (~5kya): institutional warfare — fortifications, weapons specialization, warrior burials.
Trajectory (non-linear — got worse first, then better):
- Worsened ~12kya → ~3kya: raiding → massacres → organized warfare. Fortifications (Jericho ~9kya). Estimated violent death rates 15–25% adult males.
- Peak chaos ~3kya → ~500 CE: Bronze Age collapse, classical empires. Rates may have dropped under large states (Pax Romana, Han).
- Medieval rebound: European homicide ~30–60 per 100k/year.
- Long decline ~1500 CE → now: European homicide down to ~1/100k. Pinker’s “Civilizing Process” (via Norbert Elias).
- Now: ~0.7/100k global in peaceful countries.
Pinker’s thesis contested (Falk, Hickel) — cherry-picked data, undercounted colonial violence.
Group Selection vs Individual Selection
Background: Group selection killed by Williams (1966) & Dawkins (Selfish Gene, 1976). Kin selection + reciprocal altruism explained cooperation.
Revival: D.S. Wilson & E.O. Wilson (2007) — multilevel selection (MLS). Math equivalent to kin selection (Price equation), different framing. Dawkins, Pinker, Coyne reject as relabeling.
Human exception (Boehm, Bowles, Henrich, Richerson):
- Humans suppress within-group competition via norms, punishment, egalitarianism
- Levels individual differences → between-group selection dominant
- Warfare, cultural transmission, conformity bias amplify group-level selection
- Explains “ultrasociality”
Evidence:
- Bowles: prehistoric warfare frequency made group extinction a real selective force
- Henrich (The Secret of Our Success): cultural group selection — groups with better norms outcompete
- Cooperative hunting, food sharing, alloparenting (Hrdy)
Consensus: Individual/kin selection suffices for most species. For humans, cultural group selection is mainstream; genetic group selection still debated.
Prehistoric Social Structures
Traditional view (Service, Sahlins): Linear band → tribe → chiefdom → state. Foragers = small (~25–50), egalitarian, mobile, kin-based.
Boehm’s “reverse dominance hierarchy”: Foragers actively suppress would-be alphas via mockery, ostracism, sometimes execution. Egalitarianism enforced, not natural. Ethnographic surveys of !Kung, Hadza, Mbuti.
Hrdy’s cooperative breeding: Alloparenting foundational. Required trust, signal-reading — selected for theory of mind, prosociality.
Dunbar’s number (~150): Cognitive ceiling on stable relationships, derived from neocortex ratio. Contested but influential.
Graeber & Wengrow, The Dawn of Everything (2021): Demolished linear model. Prehistoric societies were experimental — seasonal shifts between hierarchical and egalitarian modes. Large-scale cooperation without states (Göbekli Tepe ~11kya, Ukrainian mega-sites ~6kya, 10,000+ people, no clear elites). Agriculture didn’t inevitably cause hierarchy. Cities without kings. Humans had political imagination.
Counter-evidence to Graeber/Wengrow: Critics argue cherry-picking, romanticism. But the field has opened up.
Genetic evidence: Y-chromosome bottleneck ~7–5kya — extreme reproductive skew, suggesting patriarchal clans where few men monopolized reproduction. Bronze Age warlordism? Doesn’t fit pure egalitarian narrative.
Current state: Diversity is the keyword. Prehistoric humans organized in many ways — fluid, seasonal, contested. No single trajectory. Hierarchy and equality both ancient. Property, slavery, and freedom all have deep, complicated histories.
